How many slides should an Instagram carousel have?
Instagram allows up to 20 slides. There is no single right number, but the engagement data points away from “keep it short”: carousels that use more of their slides tend to earn more engagement, as long as every slide is worth a swipe.
The limit is 20
A single carousel can hold up to 20 photos or videos, raised from the old limit of 10 (see Hootsuite’s carousel guide). You rarely need all 20, and the question is less about the ceiling than about using enough slides to cover your point.
What the engagement data says
In a widely cited analysis of over 22 million Instagram posts (nearly 3 million of them carousels), Socialinsider found carousels were the most engaging post type, at 1.92% average engagement versus 1.74% for images and 1.45% for video (reported by Search Engine Journal). The slide-count pattern was the surprising part: engagement dropped off after three slides, then climbed again from eight slides up, and a post passed 2% engagement when it used all of its slides.
Most accounts leave that on the table. In the same data, the typical carousel had only two to four slides, and few used the full set. The study ran when the cap was 10, so read it as a direction rather than a target: going deeper tends to help, up to the point where a slide stops adding anything.
So how many should you use?
Match the count to the content. A single quote or announcement is fine at one to three slides. A tip list, a tutorial, or a short essay earns its swipes at eight or more. Open with a slide that gives a reason to swipe, close with a takeaway, and cut any slide that only repeats the one before it. Do not pad to hit a number, and do not drop a real point to look concise.
How much text per slide
There is no official limit. The real constraint is legibility: the text has to read at a glance on a phone, so fewer words mean larger type. A common rule of thumb is to keep a slide under about 50 words. Cards splits a long draft to fit the card size for you, and you can adjust any break by hand. For the sizes themselves, see the Instagram carousel size guide.
